THE CORE
STUDIO 2  |  Dwelling

19 Nelson Place, ADELAIDE

All creative minds need a space to stimulate continuous inspiration. For Peta (jewellery designer) and Hugh (film maker), their creative thoughts, ideas and creations need to bloom from within their home as it is also their place of work. Their residence must not only allow for their family life but also integrate their working needs creating a hybrid environment. However, when the two are joined a sense of disconnection can occur. As a result, the design of the residence has been driven by the idea of ‘connection’. This is achieved in the dwelling by creating a central spot to connect the family.

It all starts with the humble dining table.

Perfectly round and simple yet so powerful, the table becomes the ‘core’ of the home. It connects and strengthens the family bond as it encourages the occupants to come together. From the ‘core’ the rest of the program unfolds into private and public spaces like a ribbon around this centralised point, creating an optimal balance.
